Originating in Mexico and known as Flor de la Noche Buena (Flower of the Holy Night), the Poinsettia was used by the Aztecs for medicines and dyes.

Their association with Christmas begins with the legend of Pepita, a child too poor to bring a gift to the Christmas service. She picked weeds at the roadside for a bouquet. Placed at the Nativity scene, the humble weeds turned into beautiful red flowers.

Poinsettias were named in honor of the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Robert Poinsett. An avid botanist, he brought them to America. Through sharing the plant at Christmas, its popularity grew and became symbolic of the holiday season.
